👨So you’re saying you need more staff to run the production line as well as time to train them?
つまり、生産ラインを動かす従業員を増やすことと、彼らの研修をするための時間が必要だということですね？
👩Yes. In order to do this without delaying production, I’d like both of you to send more on-site experts from Japan and the US to train the additional staff.
そうです。生産を遅らせることなくこのことをするために、お二人には日米から現場の専門家をさらに派遣していただき、増員分の研修をお願いしたいのです。
👩Well, it’s subject to the factory manager’s approval, but we might be able to send a couple of people.
工場長の承認が必要ですが、2，3人なら派遣できるかもしれません。
👩We have two skilled staff to be assigned to work in Chennai. I’ll see what I can do. How about you, Henry?

👨I doubt Joe, our factory manager, would agree because that would affect our production line here in Dallas.

👨We’ve just filled the vacancies of skilled workers who left the company after the merger. But I’ll check with Joe first thing tomorrow morning.

👨Yes, the new joiners seem to have good hands-on experience, so it makes two other skilled staff available for Chennai, at least for the short term.

👩That’s great news. So, Kana, how’s the situation in Tokyo?

👩As for the two staff I mentioned yesterday, they’ve already applied for a work permit in India. According to the Indian embassy in Tokyo, the visa should be granted in a week or so.

🔑I enjoyed the interviews very much. I have to say there isn’t much of a difference between Taro and Kiko. In my view, either would be suitable.

🔑If we prioritize skills and aspirations, I think Taro would fit better. I figure he’ll come straight in and contribute to the company from day one.

最終回はピーター・バラカンさんのお話をもとにした、柴田先生とジェニーさんのディスカッションです。
👨This month, we invited broadcaster Peter Barakan to talk about his relationship with music and Japan. He got a job at a Japanese music publisher, which led to his involvement with music and eventually to having a music program on the radio.
今月はブロードキャスターのピーター・バラカンさんをお招きして、音楽や日本との関わりにまつわるお話をおうかがいしました。日本の音楽出版社で職を得たことで、日本で音楽との関わりを持ち、やがてラジオで音楽番組を持つことになったわけですね。
👨I felt his enthusiasm for introducing listeners to music he likes has been the backbone of his long career. What do you think, Jenny?
自分がいいと思った音楽をリスナーに紹介したいという熱意が、長いキャリアの根幹にあったのだと感じました。ジェニーさんはどう思いますか？
👩Oh course, enthusiasm is a prerequisite, because that’s what it takes to become a professional in any field. But enthusiasm alone is not exactly enough to build a career spanning almost 50 years.
もちろん、熱意があることは大前提です。どんな分野でも、プロになるには必要なものですから。でも熱意だけでは５０年近くにわたるキャリアを築くのに十分ではありませんよね。
👩Perhaps Mr. Barakan’s selection of songs and natural way of talking, inspired by Charlie Gillett’s music program, resonated well with his audience.
バラカンさんの、チャーリー・ギレットの音楽番組に触発された選曲と自然な語り口が、視聴者に心地よく響いたのかもしれませんね。
👨Hmm…I feel Mr. Barakan’s humble attitude adds to his charm perhaps? I liked the comment he gave, “We shouldn’t underestimate the intelligence of the audience.” I gather his humble approach to life is a modus operandi for him, and it seeps through his words and attitude.
なるほど、バラカンさんの謙虚な姿勢も魅力なのだと思います。「視聴者の知性を過小評価してはいけない」という話はいいですね。人生に対する謙虚な姿勢はバラカンさんの持ち味で、それが言葉や振る舞いににじみ出ているのでしょう。
👨On a different note, Mr. Barakan mentioned musical preference is often determined in our teens and mid-20s. What genre of music is that for you?
話は変わりますが、バラカンさんは、音楽の好みは10代から20代半ばで決まることが多いと言っていましたね。ジェニーさんにとっては、どんなジャンルの音楽ですか？
👩Hmm, there are quite a few genres that resonate with me. I was exposed to many genres of music when I was younger because my father was a musician.
うーん、心に響くジャンルは結構あるんですよね。父が音楽家だったこともあり、若いころは多くのジャンルの音楽に触れていました。
👩This includes music that was before my time, so to speak. Meanwhile, my brother introduced me to music that was current. I think the different rhythms became tied to moods and memories which have stayed with me permanently.
その中には、いわば私の時代より前の音楽も含まれています。一方、兄はそのときヒットしている音楽を紹介してくれましたね。その異なるリズムが、気分や記憶と結びついて、私の中にずっと残っているのだと思います。
👩The older I get, the less new music I add to my collection. It’s interesting that the rhythms we felt comfortable with when we were young remain for the rest of our lives. How about you, Mr. Shibata?
年を重ねるにつれて、新しい音楽をコレクションに加えることは少なくなりました。若いころに心地よいと感じたリズムは一生残るというのはおもしろいですね。柴田先生の場合はいかがですか？
👨Hmm…I guess my musical preference… tends to lean more on melody and lyrics rather than on rhythm. The likes of Queen, the Beatles, and Simon & Garfunkel that I listened to in my youth still sound comfortable for those reasons.
そうですねぇ…私の音楽の好みは…リズムよりもメロディーや歌詞に重きを置く傾向がある気がします。若いころに聴いたクイーンやビートルズやサイモン＆ガーファンクルなどは、そういった理由で今でもしっくりきます。
👨The same goes for classical music. Looking back, it was music that gave me the impetus to study Western culture and history.
クラシック音楽もそうですね。今思えば、西洋の文化や歴史を勉強するきっかけを与えてくれたのは音楽でした。
👩What a wonderful source of inspiration! As for me, it was a Japanese museum in Florida called The Morikami that got me interested in Japan, at least in the very beginning.
なんてすばらしいインスピレーションの源なのでしょう！私はというと、少なくとも最初は、フロリダにある The Morikami という日本の博物館が、日本に興味を持つきっかけになりました。
👩I found myself doing school projects about things pertaining to Japanese culture. That was before the proliferation of the internet, so information was limited.
気がつけば、私が取り組んでいる学校の課題は、日本文化に関連する事柄についてでした。まだインターネットが普及する前でしたから、情報は限られていましたね。
👩Then, I had the opportunity to take Japanese classes in high school as well as study abroad. I was left wanting more, so of course there was a strong element of Japanese pop culture that I used to explore that connection, such as video games and music.
その後、高校で日本語の授業を受けたり、海外に留学したりする機会もありました。もっと知りたいと思いましたし、もちろん、ビデオゲームや音楽など、日本のポップカルチャーの要素も大きかったので、そうしたつながりを探っていったんです。
👨Interesting… To be honest, I think it doesn’t matter what triggers your interest in a foreign country. If one’s interest in Japan starts with futuristic pop culture, then there may come a time when they would want to look to the historical side of Japan.
おもしろいですね。正直なところ、外国に興味を持つきっかけは何でもいいと思うんです。日本への興味が未来的なポップカルチャーから始まったのなら、やがて日本の歴史的な側面にも目を向けたいと思う時が来るかもしれない。
👨This may lead to learning the language, and so the curiosity spreads. I hope that Mr. Barakan will continue to lead people to the hidden charms that Japan has to offer.
それが語学学習につながるかもしれないですし、そうやって好奇心は広がっていくのでしょう。バラカンさんにはこれからも、日本の隠れた魅力に人々が目を向けるきっかけを作ってほしいと願っています。
