最終回はべネスさんのお話をもとにした、柴田先生とジェニーさんのディスカッションです。
👨Mr. Benes spoke about a wide range of UNICEF activities, relating them to his own experiences. We all know that UNICEF is the agency that helps children around the world and is probably one of the most widely known within UN-related organizations.
べネスさんは、ユニセフの幅広い活動について、ご自身の体験と重ね合わせながらお話くださいました。ユニセフが世界の子どもたちを支援する機関であることは誰もが知っていますし、国連の関連機関の中で最も広く知られている機関の１つでしょう。
👨However, the true extent of their activities may be less known. For instance, I personally didn’t know how central a role UNICEF played in vaccine procurement and distribution.
でも、その活動の実態はあまり知られていないのではないでしょうか。例えば、ワクチンの調達や流通においてユニセフがいかに中心的な役割を担っているかを、私自身は知りませんでした。
👩I didn’t know, either. Although, when we think of the considerable role they play in providing medicine for children globally, it’s not a stretch to imagine the tools they possess when distributing vaccines.
私も知りませんでした。とはいえ、世界の子どもたちに医療を提供するという大きな役割を担っていることを考えれば、ユニセフが持っているワクチン配布手段は想像に難くないですね。
👩While the activities of major companies aiding developing nations may be well known through CSR advertisements, UNICEF’s involvement in public-private partnerships concerning these areas may not be as well known.
大手企業の途上国支援活動は社会的責任に関わる広告などを通してよく知られているかもしれませんが、ユニセフの途上国支援に関する官民パートナーシップの取り組みはあまり知られていないかもしれません。
👨That’s true. Mr. Benes mentioned how private companies can partner with UNICEF by bringing in their cutting-edge products and services to developing countries.
そのとおりですね。べネスさんは、民間企業は最先端の製品やサービスを途上国に持ち込むことで、ユニセフとパートナーシップを組むことができると言っていました。
👨The mobile phone-based money-transfer service is testament to this. With companies looking to contribute to society by utilizing their state-of-the-art products and services, partnering with UNICEF has huge potential.
携帯電話を使った送金サービスがその証しです。自社の最先端の製品やサービスを活用して社会貢献したいと考えている企業にとって、ユニセフとの提携は大きな可能性を持っています。
👩Exactly. By the way, UNICEF and the Japanese government seem to cooperate a lot. Japan contributes considerably in terms of funding.
おっしゃるとおりです。ところで、ユニセフと日本政府はたくさん協力しているようです。日本は資金面でかなりの貢献をしていますね。
👩The government also has a good understanding of international cooperation and their SDGs. He also says that they are helping UNICEF not only in providing vaccines but also in cold chain support.
政府は国際協力やそのSDGsについてよく理解してもいるようです。また、べネスさんによると、ワクチンの提供だけでなく、コールドチェーンサポートでもユニセフを支援しているそうですよね。
👨It’s nice to hear such positive feedback directly from the people involved. Looking at the ranking of countries in terms of total contributions to UNICEF’s budget, Japan ranks second after the United States.
関係者の方からこういうポジティブな声を直接聞くのは嬉しいですね。ユニセフ予算への拠出合計額の国別ランキングをみると、日本はアメリカに次いで世界2位です。
👨Despite Japan’s generous fiscal contribution, the number of high-level staff working for international organizations is still considered small.
日本は多額の財政的な貢献をしているにもかかわらず、国際機関で働く高度専門職の人の数はまだ少ないと考えられています。
👩I see. That’s why you asked Mr.Benes about career paths to working in international organizations. Mr. Benes mentioned three things: professionalism, field experience, and passion.
なるほど。だから、柴田先生は、国際機関で働くという道に進むことについて、べネスさんに質問していたのですね。べネスさんは、専門性、現場経験、情熱の3点を挙げていました。
👩I think all of them are important, but I think passion is the first prerequisite. His way of speaking is gentle, but I can feel his enthusiasm and strong commitment to international cooperation, and above all, his love for children.
どれも大切だと思いますが、まずは情熱があることが大前提だと思います。べネスさんの話し方は穏やかですが、国際協力に対する情熱と強い意志、そして何より、子どもたちへの愛情が感じられますね。
👨Indeed. This was evident also from his facial expressions and body language during the interview.
確かに。それは、インタビュー中のべネスさんの表情や身ぶりなどからもうかがえました。
👨While enthusiasm is present in young Japanese, fewer students go to postgraduate study than in other developed countries. English proficiency is also an issue. The bar remains high.
日本の若い人たちには熱意はあるのですが、大学院に行く学生の数がほかの先進国に比べて少ないですし、英語力の問題もあります。ハードルは高いままなのです。
👩I have heard, and can easily imagine, that the level of English required by international organizations is quite high. You have to read a lot of documents, write reports, as well as communicate with peers all over the globe.
国際機関で求められる英語力については、かなり高いということを聞いたことがありますし、容易に想像できます。多くの書類を読み、レポートを書き、さらに世界中の仲間とコミュニケーションを取らなければならないですからね。
👩As a native English speaker, I feel awkward saying this, but I think that is a common challenge for non-native applicants.
英語がネイティブの私が言うのも気が引けますが、その点はノンネイティブの志願者には共通の課題と言えるのではないでしょうか。
👨You could say that. I believe that in order to improve our reputation in the field of international cooperation, we need to increase our human resources as well as our financial resources so that we can gain recognition from the international community and the local population.
そう言えるかもしれませんね。国際協力分野における日本の評価を高めるには、資金面に加えて人材面を厚くすることが必要だと思います。そうすることで、国際社会や地元住民からの認知度を上げられるでしょう。
