👨So, Kana, Henry, there’s something that I’d like to talk to you about.
実は、カナさん、ヘンリーさん、お話したいことがあるんですけど。
👨Oh, I’m all ears, Anton. What is it?
そうですか、ぜひおうかがいしたいです、アントンさん。何ですか？
👨It’s about your next assignment. Henry, I’d like you to work in Tokyo, and Kana, I wonder if you’re interested in working in Chennai.

昨日はよく眠れましたか？
👩Not really… I didn’t expect to be offered a transfer during a business trip. Tokyo hasn’t told me anything yet.
実はあまり・・・まさか出張中に転勤の話が出るとは思いませんでした。東京からはまだ何も言われてないんですけどね。
👨I guess that’s an American way to do business. Top management likes to cherry-pick the best person for an important position. Are you considering the offer?
それはアメリカ的なビジネスのやり方なんだと思いますよ。トップマネジメントは重要なポジションに最適な人物を引き抜こうとするものなんです。オファーについては検討していますか？
👩Well, I’m not exactly sure… It’s not like I have family to worry about. It’s a position I’m interested in, but I’ll have to ask my boss in Tokyo first. How about you, Henry?

🔑I talked about the transfer with my boss back in Tokyo. He simply said that he’d be happy if I’m OK with the transfer. It seems that Dallas was also one of the candidates.
転勤の件、戻って東京の上司と話をしたところ、私さえよければぜひ赴任してほしいと言われました。ダラスも候補の1つだったようです。
🔑To be honest, I want to work in Dallas. But that said, I’m also keen to see firsthand how our project in Chennai would develop, so I’ve decided to take on the challenge.
正直なところ、ダラスで働きたいです。とはいえ、チェンナイでのプロジェクトがどのように展開されるのか、実際に見てみたいという気持ちもあり、挑戦することにしました。

👨This month, we had Kate Harris, university research administrator, as a guest. On this program in April 2021, Professor Lynda Gratton of the London Business School mentioned that expertise is crucial for career longevity.
今月は、URAのケイト・ハリスさんをゲストにお迎えしました。2021年4月のこの番組で、ロンドンビジネススクールのリンダ・グラットン教授は、長いキャリアを積むには専門性が極めて重要だとおっしゃっていました。
👨It’s encouraging to see Dr. Harris using the knowledge and skills she developed as a researcher to assist a greater number to flourish.
ハリスさんが研究者として培った知識とスキルを駆使して、より多くの人が活躍できるように支援する姿は頼もしい限りですね。
👩It really is. I could sense that Dr. Harris feels she has a lot to live up to in her current job. She has a wealth of knowledge in chemistry and likes writing academic papers. She’s a native speaker of English and is also proficient in Japanese
本当にそうですね。ハリスさんが今の仕事で多くの期待に応えていると感じているのが伝わってきました科学の知識が豊富で、論文を書くのが好き。英語はネイティブで、日本語にも堪能です。
👩On top of that, she enjoys working in a supportive role. She seems to be equipped with all the elements required for the job she has now.
加えて、サポート役として働くのが好きです。今の仕事に必要な要素をすべて備えているようですね。
👨Yes, we could say this is her calling. There are two aspects to her work: to encourage more talented young foreign students to come to Japan for research and to make Japanese research more known abroad. Both are crucial for Japan’s future.
確かに、彼女の天職だと言えるかもしれませんね。彼女の仕事には2つの側面があります。日本に研究に来てもらうよう、もっと多くの若くて優秀あ外国の学生に働きかけること、そして、日本での研究をもっと海外で知ってもらうこと。どちらも日本の将来にとって極めて重要です。
👩I agree. I don’t know much about the Japanese system, but I think that American graduate schools offer better financial aid for international students.
同感です。日本の制度についてはよく知りませんが、アメリカの大学院は外国人留学生に対する金銭的な支援がもっと充実していると思います。
👩Of course, the presence of a famous professor in the field is a motivation travel abroad for research purposes, but no one can underestimate the importance of financial support.
もちろん、その分野で有名な教授の存在は研究目的で海外に行く動機ではありますが、金銭的なサポートの重要性を軽視できる人はいませんよね。
👨Exactly. You may have second thoughts if financial issues exist. Not only that, young researchers in the US put a lot of effort into the external dissemination of their research.
そのとおりです。資金面の問題があると二の足を踏むかもしれませんからね。それだけでなく、アメリカにいる若手の研究者は研究の対外的な発信にかなり力を入れています。
👨No matter what language handicap researchers may have, proactively presenting their research to audiences overseas is part of the job. No matter how technically superior the research may be, if one cannot present it to the world, it will be a waste of money.
研究者は、どんな言葉のハンデがあっても、自分の研究を積極的に国外の人たちに向けて発信することが、仕事の一部になっています。いくら専門的に優れた研究でも、それを世界に発信できなければ、お金の無駄ですね。
👩I feel the same. Dr. Harris has an important role to play in terms of lowering the psychological barriers of English.
私もそう思います。英語の心理的障壁を下げるという意味で、ハリスさんの果たす役割は重要ですね。
👩Her advice – just focusing on getting your message across inn simple and straightforward language – seems to resonate with what you always say, Mr. Shibata.
シンプルでわかりやすい言葉でメッセージを伝えることに集中するだけでいいという彼女のアドバイスは、柴田先生がいつもおっしゃっていることと重なるような気がします。
👨I’m glad you noticed that. I think that being freed from the curse of having to speak grammatically correct English will lead to a positive feeling of wanting to exchange information with international researchers.
気づいてもらえてうれしいですね。文法的に正しい英語を話さなくてはならないという呪縛から解放されることが、外国の研究者と情報交換したいという前向きな気持ちにつながるのだと思います。
👨I hope that Japanese graduate schools will become more diversified than ever to create stimulating environments.
