👨What made the previous owners leave ?

👩Takeshi here has looked into this. Takeshi ?

👨Yes. Apparently, energy prices were very volatile, making it difficult to calculate profit. Drops in demand due to the pandemic were the final nail in the coffin.
はい。エネルギー価格の変動がとても激しくて、利益の計算が難しかったらしいですね。パンデミックによる需要減がとどめをさしたというわけです。
👨Right. Well, if the problem isn’t the facility or location, who should we meet with ? Energy companies ?

👨No, I think we should meet with local government officials. They are desperate for someone to take over the facility and create jobs.

どういたしまして。こちらは先ほど会ったタケシさん、私たちのチームの最年少メンバーです。将来のCEO！

👨My father was an expat in Mumbai, so I spent four years there during my primary school days. And during that time, I surfed a lot.
父は駐在員でムンバイにいたので、小学校時代に4年間、そこで過ごしました。当時は、よくサーフィンをしました。
👨Surfing ? Ahh, that’s something we don’t have in the Arizona desert. Nice !

最終回は桂三輝さんのお話をもとにした、柴田先生とジェニーさんのディスカッションです。
👨This month’s interview was with Katsura Sunshine, a Canadian rakugo storyteller. He worked as a playwright in Toronto, adapting Greek comedies into musicals, and dreamed that one day his work would be performed on Broadway.
今月のインタビューは、カナダ人の落語家、桂三輝さんでした。三輝さんはトロントで劇作家としてギリシャ喜劇をミュージカル化する仕事をしていて、いつか自分の作品がブロードウェイで上演されることを夢見ていました。
👨But that came true in the most unlikely of ways –in the form of a rakugo performance. What an incredible story, right ? You never know what life can throw at you.
しかし、それは落語の公演という、最もあり得ない形で実現したわけですね。何とも信じられない話ですよね？人生は何が起こるかわからないものです。
👩Absolutely. Life is about fate and luck, but fate will only come to you when you make the effort.
まさにそうですよね。人生は縁と運ですが、縁は自分が努力したときにしかやって来ないものです。
It must have taken a lot of courage and determination for Mr.Sunshine to become a professional rakugo storyteller, especially as a foreigner, where you have to go through rigorous training in very traditional circumstances. Do you have any idea what the training looks like?
三輝さんがプロの落語家になるには、特に外国人として、相当な勇気と覚悟が必要だったでしょう。非常に伝統的な環境の中で厳しい修行をしなけれあなりませんからね。その修業がどのようなものなのか、おわかりになりますか？
👨No, but I would imagine there’s not much in terms of a training program, no textbooks, no regular feedback on your performances.
いいえ、でも想像できるのは、修行のカリキュラムはあまりないし、教科書もないし、自分の演技への定期的なフィードバックもない、ということです。
👨You’ll probably just have to watch your master and seniors and figure out what you learn from them and what you can do for them by yourself. I’m sure Japanese masters are not the type to give you much praise either.
師匠や兄弟子の姿を見て、その人たちから何を学び、その人たちのために何ができるかを自分で考えていくしかないでしょう。おまけに、日本の師匠はあまり褒めてくれるタイプでもないと思いますしね。
👩That sounds pretty tough. On top of that, foreigners have the language barrier. When I watched some of his rakugo stories on the internet, I felt his sensitivity to language and culture because he talks a lot about the differences between Japanese and English.
それはかなり大変そうですね。そのうえ、外国人には言葉の壁があります。ネットで三輝さんの落語をいくつか見てみたのですが、言葉や文化に対する感性が伝わってきました。日本語と英語の違いについてたくさん話していますからね。
👩What do you think about his Japanese proficiency ?
三輝さんの日本語力についてはどう思われますか？
👨I get the impression that he understands the very subtle nuances of Japanese expressions. I think it’s proof that he has carefully observed the context in which the words are used and has learned to connect them to the history and culture behind them.
三輝さんは、日本語の表現の非常に微妙なニュアンスを理解している印象を受けます。それは、その言葉が使われる文脈をよく観察し、その背景にある歴史や文化と結びつけて学んでいる証拠だと思います。
👨Learning Japanese is one thing, but what impressed me most is that he understands the Japanese mind behind the words and phrases.
日本語を学ぶこともそうですが、言葉の向こうにある日本人の心を理解していることが、何より印象的でした。
👩That makes sense to me. That’s why he can draw an interesting comparison between the two languages.
そのとおりだと思います。だから、２つの言語の比較をおもしろく描けるのでしょうね。
👩So, it seems to me that many of Mr.Sunshine’s stories are based on his own experience with Japanese language and culture, but how different is his rakugo from traditional ones ?
三輝さんの落語の多くは、ご自身の日本語や日本文化の体験に基づいているように思いますが、伝統的な落語とはどのように違うのでしょうか？
👨That’s a good question. When you look at Sunshine san’s performance, you’ll notice that it’s a hybrid of traditional stories and his newly created ones based on his unique cross-cultural observation and experience.
それはいい質問ですね。三輝さんの公演を見ると、伝統的な噺と、彼独自の異文化観察や体験に基づく新しい噺が融合したものであることがわかります。
👨His punchlines are 400 years in the making, but he has evolved his own style of rakugo. I would say it’s a unique style of comedy with traditional rakugo blended in. It’s one of a kind.
落ちは400年前のものですが、独自のスタイルの落語を発展させているんです。伝統的な落語が融合したユニークなコメディスタイルと言えるでしょう。唯一無二の存在ですね。
👩I see. Well, another thing that strikes me is that rakugo is universal. I don’t think the storytellers in the Edo-period thought about spreading their art to the world, but it’s interesting that topics such as human relationships have transcended national borders.
なるほど。もう１つ印象的なのは、落語は世界に通じるものだということです。江戸時代の噺家は、自分たちの芸を世界に広げようとは考えていなかったと思いますが、人間関係などのテーマが国境をこえているのはおもしろいですね。
👩In addition, I think the fact that Mr.Sunshine’s English is easy to understand has also helped rakugo to be accepted globally. What do you think ?
また、三輝さんの英語がわかりやすいことも、落語が世界で受け入れられることにつながっているのではないでしょうか？どう思われますか？
👨That’s good point. Sunshine-san mentions this in his book. English slang would bring to mind contemporary everyday scenes, so he decided to use easy and colorless English to convey the sentiment of Japan as you would find in textbooks on English.
それはいい視点ですね。三輝さんは著書（『空気の読み方、教えてください』）の中で、このことに触れています。英語のスラングだと現代の日常の風景が浮かんでしまうので、英語の教科書に載っているような、簡単で無色の英語で日本の情緒を伝えることにしたのだそうです。
👨So, I think there’s a good chance that his rakugo will become popular even among non-native English speakers. I’m excited to see that happen.
ですから、英語を母語としない人たちの間でも、三輝さんの落語は人気が出る可能性が高いと思うんですよ。そうなるのが、楽しみですね。
