👨The pleasure is ours, Doctor. Wait, is it OK for you to drink ? I thought some religions and states don’t allow alcohol.
こちらこそありがとうございます。えっ、お酒を飲んでもいいのですか？宗教や州によっては、お酒は許されないと思っていましたが。
👳Well, the state of Tamil Nadu doesn’t ban alcohol entirely. You can buy it at designated shops run by the municipality.
タミル・ナドゥ州は、完全にアルコールを禁止しているわけではありません。自治体が運営する指定された店で買うことができるんですよ。
👩But neither hindus nor Muslims drink, right ?
でも、ヒンズー教徒もイスラム教徒もお酒を飲みませんよね？
👳It depends. My family are from Goa which used to be a Portuguese colony. There are a lot of Christians there like myself, so we drink every now and then. Also, beer actually goes well with curry !
人によると思いますね。私の家族は、かつてポルトガルの植民地だったゴアの出身地なんです。ゴアには私のようなキリスト教徒がたくさんいるので、時々お酒を飲むんです。それに、カレーにはビールがよく合いますよ！
👩I didn’t know there was a Christian diaspora in India. So much diversity in one country !

👳Well, it’s a miracle it’s one country ! India is really a salad bowl of cultures.

👳Well, Chennai is looking to act boldly for future infrastructure projects, so we’ll do our best to make sure your investment turns out well.
チェンナイでは、今後のインフラ整備に向け、大胆な施策を打っていきたいと考えていますので、皆さんの投資が必ずうまくいくよう最善を尽くします。
👨Regarding funding for this project, we’ve already started talking to our banks in Texas and Tokyo. I’ll discuss with our potential suppliers about their interest in moving to Chennai.

最終回はトニー・カーンさんのお話をもとにした、柴田先生とジェニーさんのディスカッションです。
👨This month, I interviewed Tony Khan, the president of the Japanese subsidiary of a global company in the logistics industry.
今月は、物流業界におけるグローバル企業の日本法人社長、トニー・カーンさんにインタビューしました。
👨Mr. Khan’s case reminds us that an assignment at one’s workplace could change the course of one’s life. I was impressed by his determination and his efforts to integrate into the countries he was assigned to.
カーンさんのケースからは、勤務先の辞令が人生の進路を変える可能性があるということを改めて思いますね。赴任先の国に溶け込もうとするカーンさんの決意と努力が印象に残りました。
👩Yes, he was absolutely determined. Mr. Khan’s humble attitude of respect for the local culture and his extraordinary enthusiasm to learn from it are truly amazing.
ええ、揺るがない決意を持っていましたね。現地の文化を尊重する謙虚な姿勢と、そこから学ぼうとする並々ならぬ熱意は、本当にすごいと思います。
👩I admire his efforts to blend in with the locals instead of being an outsider. It is only natural that the locals would try to reach out to him. I should follow his good example.
よそ者でいるのではなく、現地の人に溶け込もうとする努力に感心します。地元の人が彼に手を差し伸べようとするのは、ごく当然だと思います。私も見習わなければ。
👨An example to us all. The enthusiasm and humility that Mr. Khan had as a young man hasn’t changed in the course of his career, even now as he sits at top management.
皆にとってのお手本ですね。カーンさんが若いころに持っていた熱意と謙虚さは、キャリアを重ねる中で、経営トップに立っている今でも変わっていないのですから。
👨He mentioned about situational leadership. I think it is his cultural sensitivity that motivates the employees around him.
状況対応型のリーダーシップについて言及されていましたが、彼の文化に対する感性が、周りの従業員のモチベーションを高めているのだと思います。
👩I agree. He’s culturally sensitive. We live in an increasingly diverse society, so I think leaders like Mr. Khan are sought after. What I found amazing is his human-centered approach.
私もそう思います。カーンさんは文化に対して敏感です。私たちは多様化が進む社会に生きているので、カーンさんのようなリーダーが求められているのだと思います。私がすごいと思ったのは、人間が中心にいるというアプローチです。
👩His story about the earthquake is touching. Behind the frantic efforts to resume deliveries is the strong motivation that there are people waiting for their parcels. Mr. Khan really cares about people.
震災のときの話は感動的です。必死の努力で配達を再開する背景には、「荷物を待っている人がいる」という強い動機があります。カーンさんは本当に人を大切にする人なんですね。
👨Indeed. He cares about his customers as well as his employees. Mr. Khan’s statement “every package has a story” shows the company’s philosophy and his attitude towards work.
確かに。お客さんだけでなく、従業員も大切にしている。カーンさんの「すべての荷物には物語がある」という言葉には、会社の理念や仕事に対するカーンさんの姿勢が表れていますね。
👨But above all, I think passion is the source of his power and determination. Of course, logic is important to move things forward, but ultimately, it’s passion that moves the people around you.
でも何より、情熱が彼のパワーと決意の源なのだと思います。もちろん、物事を進めるにはロジックは大切ですが、最終的には情熱が周囲の人たちを動かしていくのだと思います。
👩Yes, he’s passionate about everything he does and gives it his all. Passion is what drives people, especially in times of crisis such as earthquakes and pandemics.
そうですね、カーンさんは何事にも情熱的に取り組み、全力を尽くしています。特に地震やパンデミックなど危機的な状況のときには、情熱が人を動かすのです。
👩There were a lot of words that really hit me, and I think that’s because Mr. Khan is leading the term by example.
私の心に強く響く言葉がたくさんありましたが、それはカーンさんが模範となってチームを引っ張っているからだと思います。
👨Absolutely. Leading by example — that’s what makes one’s statement so powerful. While Mr. Khan’s comments on cross-cultural understanding and leadership were very insightful, he also showed us an example of global English as a non-native speaker.
そのとおり。模範を示してリーダーシップをとること、それが人の発言にとても大きな力を与えるのです。異文化理解やリーダーシップに関するカーンさんのお話は非常に本質を突いたものでしたが、同時に、ノンネイティブスピーカーとしてのグローバル英語の例も示してくれました。
👨We can learn a lot about how to convey our thoughts and feelings passionately and how to tell our experiences vividly in plain English.
